CHAPTER 18

Everest slumped in his chair. He looked half dead now. His face was pasty white and beaded with sweat. "They're gone." He said, his voice barely audible over the rain pelting the windscreens.

"That wave, it was monstrous, forty feet high, came out of nowhere. It caught them on their starboard side; they never stood a chance. It took them down so fast. We're lucky it didn't take us too. We barely shook the water off our decks. Everest cleared his throat and tried to right himself. He must have realized now was not the time for shock or mourning. He had his own ship to look after.

"Lost more containers, but I think we faired alright. What happened down there?"

"Three of them got on board, but we disarmed them and took them into custody."

"Where are they?"

"Babcock and McDowell have them in the observation lounge. Two non-commissioned and one officer. Lieutenant, probably their first officer. He was the one on the radio."

"He should be informed about his ship."

"I'll handle it."

"What do we do now? I'm open to suggestions."

"We ride out the storm; let the Filipinos take our three guests off our hands."

"What about Singapore?"

"We can't turn back. The Chinese ship would have been in radio contact with their base. That radio contact has now been lost. The Chinese will send everything they have in this direction looking for them."

"This is a bloody mess."

"We're making up the rules as we go along. We just have to roll with it."

Everest turned to Grant. "You alright?"

"It was intense down there, but I'm fine now," she said.

"Are you able to resume your duties?"

"Of course, Captain."

"Good, you have the bridge. I have to go take a crap." The captain said. An attempt at levity. It worked on the crew, at least.

When Vince entered the observation lounge, the Chinese sailors were sitting in the leather club chairs, watching Babcock and McDowell closely.

"We were just about to put on a movie for our guests. Jackie Chan's new flick," Babcock said.

"Cut it out," Vince said. "Don't let your guard down. Can't you see they are watching for weakness?"

"They'll have to watch pretty closely," Charlie said, and he patted the SAW. "Got my baby on full auto. They make one twitch, and it lights out, Jackie Chan."

McDowell was leaning up against the wall, feigning calmness, but he was griping his weapon more tightly than Babcock. Ready for anything. Maybe too ready, Vince thought.

"I'm the security manager for this vessel. Let's start with your names." Vince said.

The two able seamen looked at their officer for guidance. Vince speculated that neither of them had a command of English like the Lieutenant did.

"We are members of the People's Liberation Army Navy." The officer said.

"PLAN, yes, I gathered that. Are you injured?"

"No," the officer said.

"Your names then?"

"I am Lieutenant Qing, First Officer of the Chang Shek," I demand to speak to my captain.

"About that. Afraid that's going to be a little hard to do." Vince sucked in a lung full of air. This was no time for mockery; these men had lost their comrades and friends in the line of duty.
